Presentation

The second-cycle degree program in Civil Engineering is based on a consolidated cultural tradition. It provides solid, concrete grounding and offers many career opportunities. The 2nd cycle degree in Civil Engineering provides knowledge, skills and professional competencies in the advanced design of structures and infrastructures, town and territorial planning, programming and management of complex systems and services. Graduates in Civil Engineering find employment in construction and maintenance firms in the field of civil works, systems and civil infrastructure; professional firms and companies designing works, systems and infrastructures; public bodies working in the design, planning, management and control of urban and territorial systems; companies, bodies and consortia managing and monitoring works and services systems.

Course content

The study program is designed for first-cycle degree graduates already possessing appropriate physical and mathematical grounding and consolidated knowledge of Civil Engineering subjects. The first year of the program includes course units regarding the main core sectors, including Building Science, Building Techniques, Geotechnics and Road Infrastructures. Alongside these some course units in complementary fields are delivered, aiming to extend the level of interdisciplinarity of the study program. During the second year, students study further and specialize their knowledge in order to tackle complex problems in both conventional and more recent fields, including earthquake engineering, the use of innovative materials, diagnosis and monitoring of buildings, structural renovation and rehabilitation, advanced design of road and hydraulic infrastructures, etc. The study program is completed with a dissertation which offers a fundamental opportunity for the individual development of the cultural contents of the program, as well as an internship carried out in companies and professional firms active in the Modena area.

Career options

The second-cycle program in Civil Engineering is designed to train professional figures specialized in the design, construction, maintenance and management of civil structures and infrastructures which serve the community. With this specific learning outcome, the program provides students with in-depth knowledge of all consolidated and traditional subject areas of Civil Engineering. In particular the program aims to provide the knowledge and skills for the advanced design of civil and industrial structures, particularly concerning the protection of buildings and monuments against seismic risk; the design and management of infrastructure works including railways, airports, bridges, gas pipelines, aqueducts, sewerage systems, etc.; the advanced design of geotechnical works including soil support and containment systems, tunnels, special foundations, wells, etc.; the management of water resources and reduction of hydro-geological risk; energy management and thermo technical systems. Civil engineering graduates will therefore be able to work at the highest level for companies, public administration and in a freelance capacity, also in an international environment, combining technical and engineering knowledge and competencies with organizational and coordination skills.
